CyberLink YouPaint

CyberLink YouPaint (made for Dell) provides a friendly and creative environment for young users, bringing the fun of drawing pictures to a computer. Children can draw, use a stamp, trace, and erase using a mouse, a touchpad, or simply their finger when using a touch panel platform.

Designing for Kids

Kids don't have the same logic, experience, and expected behavior as an adult would have and are extremely spontaneous and relentless. In order to make YouPaint as friendly as for kids possible researches were done on what kids love, how kids paint on canvases, organize their toys, and of their general "working environment". Turns out there really is no "order" in a kid's world, they'll grab whatever is at hand and work from it. Trying to draw Superman? Well if there's no red around, then Superman will be purple today and look just as good.

The Design

The UI design and layout of YouPaint was meant to replicate a kid's working space with all the tools' placements being dynamic and easily swappable as the kids please. However, with YouPaint being a consumer product and parents potentially using it with their kids, there still needs to be definitive order and controls to the tools.

Bold, distinct, and colorful icons were designed to be easily recognizable, inspirational, and playful for everyone. All the tools are available at a glance within proximity and to add to the fun, more than 50 stamps and coloring templates were designed for the kids to play with.
